Kvarkenhamnar AB will apply for a continued and extended permit in accordance with Chapter 9. Environmental Code for port operations at the port of Umeå and now conducts consultations in accordance with Chapter 6. the Environmental Code. The business will be conducted mainly as before, but with increased quantities of goods and with expanded facilities for port operations.
We have a lot of things going on in the Ports of Umeå and Vaasa right now. Big investments are being made with the intention of strengthening Umeå and Vaasa as Europe's northernmost main logistics node for intermodal transports - an efficient combination of sea, rail and road. This means improvments and adaptions of the ports.
Reconstruction of the ferry terminal, ferry pier and surrounding areas is currently underway to be able to handle Wasaline's new ferry, which will be taken into use in the spring of 2021. The ferry is one of the world's most modern and environmentally friendly passenger ferries and will operate in Umeå-Vaasa. The new ferry also has a larger cargo capacity, compared to the previous one, to cover an increased demand for freight transport.
Kvarken Ports is a joint port company for the ports of Umeå in Sweden and Vaasa in Finland. The aim of this cooperation is to develop the ports’ market position in the Baltic Sea trade.
