Growth and Investments

The second operational year for Kvarken Ports is characterized by growth, stability and investments. The total amount of goods grew 5 %, and reached a total of 3,6 million tons.

”During 2016 the integration between the two ports was finalized. The co-operation between the ports, as well as with the owners, the municipality of Umeå and the city of Vaasa, is on very good level. Last year we started investing and during 2017 we will focus on the planning of the vast infrastructure projects we have ahead of us”, states MD Matti Esko.

The volumes for Umeå are on a stable level of 2,2 million tons, mainly consisting of export of wood and kraftliner. The import consists of liquid and dry bulk, i.e. fuel and fodder. The container volumes continued to grow, reaching all time high 29 000 TEU:s. The port also handled several project transports. Kvarken Ports invested in a new mobile crane with a lifting capacity of 125 tons in order to meet the increasing containerisation and upcoming project cargo transports.

The port in Vaasa handled 1,4 million tons, which is an increase of 16 % compared to 2015. The growth is mainly due to increased bulk volumes, such as coal, but also due to the increased amount of project transports. The logistic company Backman-Trummer opened its new Short Sea Terminal in the port and the rail road from the city to the harbour was renovated, two factors that increases the ports competitiveness. New warehouses are under planning, in and adjacent to the port, for 2017.

”We are counting on continuous growth for this year. We believe in growth in the bulk segment in both ports and also in a growing number of project transports, related to wind mill projects and to the local industry. The year has started positively with new deals in Umeå, and in Vaasa we are working on establishing a regular feeder line to Europe”, says Marketing and Sales Manager Markus Rönnblom.

The passenger terminal in Vaasa has been renovated and both Wasaline and Kvarken Ports has moved into newly renovated, optimal premises. The amount of passengers between Vaasa and Umeå has continued to grow and reached 184 144 passengers in 2016, an increase of 9,2 %.

Both ports are preparing for growth in both freight and passenger volumes. There is ongoing planning for the new container handling area, container quay and bulk area i Umeå. In Vaasa plans are made for lengthening of a quay and of renewing the berths.
